RUTHER GLEN, Va. - - The Missouri men's golf team moved from a tie for ninth place after two rounds to a tie for fifth after Tuesday's third and final round of the Mattaponi Springs Shootout at the Mattaponi Spring Golf Club in Ruther Glen, Va. The Tigers' final round total of 277 was the best final round of the 15-team field.
Junior Shawn Jasper finished in a tie for seventh place after carding the best round in the field of the final day, a six-under par 66, giving him a three-round total of 212 (71-75-66). Jasper's third round included seven birdies, 10 pars and just one bogey.
Senior Chris Mabry finished tied for 17th place with a 54-hole score of 215 (75-68-72). Mabry had three-consecutive bogies on holes three, four and five, carding a three-over par 39 on the front nine. But rallied with three birdies on the back nine and turned in a three-under 33 to get back to even par for the day.
Fellow senior Ben Scott recorded the Tigers' second best round of the day behind Jasper's 66 with a three-under 69, which put him tied for 21st place with a three-round total of 216 (77-70-69).
Junior John Kelly was also under par in round three, recording a total of seven birdies on the day and shooting a two-under par 70, giving him a 54-hole score of 219 (76-73-70) and placing him in a tie for 28th spot.
Junior Michael Unger finished tied for 53rd place with a three-round score of 224 (77-74-73).
Wake Forest won the tournament with a three-round total of 839 after shooting a final round 281, which was the second best round of the day, four shots behind Missouri's 277 score.
Next week, Mizzou will host the Missouri Bluffs Intercollegiate at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club in St. Charles, Mo. on Oct. 10-11.
