With its 11-8 win in game five of the Fall World Series, the Mizzou Black team took the championship of the series. The Black team trailed two games to one after three games, but rallied to win the final two games and take the series victory.
Senior Trevor Helms led the Black team on Thursday with a 4-for-5 night, driving in two runs and scoring three. Sophomore Kurt Calvert and senior J.C. Field each added two hits and six players for the Black team had an RBI and five drove in two runs.
Included in the four hits for Helms was a home run in the top of the eighth inning. It was one of three homers on the night as, junior Hunter Mense connected for a two-run shot in the fourth and junior Gary Arndt had a solo home run for the Gold team in the sixth inning.
Junior Stephan Holst started on the mound for Mizzou Black and struck out six in 4.2 innings of work. Senior Nick Admire pitched the next 3.1 innings before senior Travis Wendte finished it off pitching the ninth.
The Tigers will open up the 2006 schedule on Feb. 9 against East Tennessee in the Charleston Southern Tournament in Charleston, S.C. Mizzou will open up its home season on March 1, when Illinois State visits Taylor Stadium.
