KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - - The Mizzou men's golf team is tied for fourth after the first day of the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions at Holston Hill Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. After shooting a 292 on the first 18 holes of the day, the Tigers improved by 15 strokes in the second round to card a 277, the best second round of the 14-team field.
Four of the five Mizzou golfers improved on their first round score in round two, including three Tigers who shot in the 60's for the afternoon 18 holes.
Senior Ben Scott is tied for 13th individually with a 36-hole score of 141 (70-71) to lead Missouri. Junior John Kelly is one stroke behind Scott with a two-round total of 142, placing him in a tie for 18th. Kelly turned in the best second round for Mizzou with a 68 after shooting a 74 in the morning.
Junior Shawn Jasper is in a tie for 22nd place with a 143 two-round total (74-69) and senior Chris Mabry stands in a tie for 27th (75-69=144). Freshman Peter Malnati is tied for 46th with a 36-hole score of 147 (74-73).
Tennessee, the tournament host, leads by 18 strokes over second place Alabama. Mizzou is three strokes behind third-place Georgia Southern and five shots behind Alabama.
The tournament will conclude with the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
