COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS) notched two match-play wins Friday at Millwood Golf & Racquet Club in Ozark, Mo., to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2005 Missouri State Amateur.
Kelly started with a 1-up win over Columbia's D.J. Chung in the morning's second round, then ousted Brice Garnett of Gallatin, 6-and-4, in the third round. Garnett advanced to the third round with a 3-and-2 win over Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS) to eliminate the Mizzou junior. Kelly, the No. 57 seed after stroke-play qualifying, will play top-seeded Matthew Bortis of Springfield in a Saturday-morning quarterfinal match.
Sophomore Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell HS / Newman Univ.), who rested up for the second round by posting the most lopsided win of the entire tournament in the first round, made up for it on Friday. He defeated Mike Lueders of St. Louis in 19 holes in the morning, then was eliminated in a 25-hole marathon Friday afternoon by Brent Holmes of Glen Carbon, Ill.
Freshman Kyle Marcolla (Chillicothe, Mo. / Chillicothe HS), the reigning Missouri Junior Amateur Champion, lost his second-round match to Springfield's Travis Mitchell, 5-and-4.
The four winners of Saturday morning's 18-hole quarterfinals will face off in afternoon semifinals, with the 36-hole final set for Sunday.
