COLUMBIA, Mo. - Four members of the Missouri men's golf team have advanced through stroke-play qualifying of the 2005 Missouri State Amateur, being held this week at Millwood Golf & Racquet Club in Ozark, Mo. They are part of the 64-man match-play segment of the championships, which will be decided in a 36-hole final on Sunday.
Sophomore Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell HS / Newman Univ.) is the No. 3 seed after firing qualifying rounds of 69 and 66 on Tuesday and Wednesday. He faces 62nd seed Matt Barnier of Rogersville this morning.
Junior Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS) is seeded ninth, and faces No. 56 seed Jay McBride of Lebanon. Mabry carded a first-round 69 before closing with a 70 in qualifying.
Freshman Kyle Marcolla (Chillicothe, Mo. / Chillicothe HS), the reigning Missouri Junior Amateur Champion, is the tournament's 10th seed after closing qualifying with a 67. He will play No. 55 seed Mike Dallmeyer of Jefferson City on Thursday.
Sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS) rounds out the Tiger contingent as the No. 57 seed following qualifying rounds of 78 and 71. He faces 1999 Champion Skip Berkmeyer of St. Louis.
Among the notables to miss the cut for match play were redshirt freshman Chris Zeller (Branson, Mo. / Branson HS) and former Mizzou quarterback Kirk Farmer.
After today's first round, the tournament will contest 18-hole second and third rounds on Friday, with 18-hole quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday.
