Columbia, Mo. -Junior outfielder Janessa Roening was named USA Softball National and Big 12 Conference Player of the Week for her accomplishments during the week of April 24. A native of Port Angeles, Wash., Roening was 7-for-13 in games against North Dakota State and No. 4 Texas A&M. Strong at the plate, Roening notched four runs, seven RBI and blasted two homers, one in each game against the Aggies. Roening totaled 13 bases on the week and was 1-for-1 on stolen bases, recording a .571 on-base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage. Leading off for the Tigers for the first time of the season April 27, against North Dakota State, Roening scored one of MU's eight runs on the way to a run-rule shutout of the Bison.
Playing against Big 12 regular-season champion Texas A&M, Roening was 4-for-6 on the weekend, tallying six RBI including the game-winning single in Saturday's 6-5 victory. Roening's Sunday afternoon two-out, two-run, fifth-inning shot helped put Missouri on the scoreboard for the first time of the game and her seventh-inning two-out single to right field scored the game-tying run to send the game into extra innings. The Tigers completed their sweep of the Aggies with their eventual 5-4 victory on Sunday.
From her work in the field, Roening was a perfect 1.000 through the four game week and added two putouts to her season total (23).
"I am both proud and honored to be part of a team that plays with such heart and emotion and I think our two-game series with Texas A&M was probably the most heartfelt games we've played all season," Roening said. "I can honestly say that I've never felt that level of emotion before. I know that this team is capable of great things and these wins were not a one-time thing. I really think we've helped take this program to a whole new level and I'm glad that I've been able to help this team achieve its level of success this season."
The USA Softball National Player of the Week Honor is the first ever for a Missouri softball player while the Big 12 Player of the week is MU's second of the 2005 season.
