OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - - Mizzou sophomore Max Scherzer became the new season strikeout record holder at MU with 128 on the year after striking out eight on Thursday night in a 10-1 win over Texas Tech at the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City. The Tigers advance to the semifinals of the tournament with the victory.
Scherzer allowed just one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched to moved to 9-3 on the year. He passes John Dettmer's mark of 127 set in the 1991 season.
Junior Derek Chambers and freshman Jacob Priday each had RBI doubles in the first inning, helping Mizzou to an early lead with a three run first inning. The Tigers had a second three-run inning, putting three across the plate in the third inning. Priday has his second double of the game in the third inning, driving in two.
Priday had three hits and drove in three runs against the Red Raiders. He has had at least three hits in a game four times this season.
Cooper Fouts' single in the bottom of the third inning was the first Texas Tech hit off of Scherzer in 9 2/3 innings. Scherzer did not allow a hit in seven innings pitched in a combined no-hitter over the Red Raiders on April 1.
The first three batters to the plate for Tech in the fifth inning all reached safely and Joseph Callendar scored TTU's only run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Blair.
Missouri would regain its six-run lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning as Priday singled and scored on a double by junior Trevor Helms. Sophomore John McKee scored on an error in the eighth inning to give MU an 8-1 lead.
Mizzou reached double digits in runs for the 22nd time this season when junior Greg O'Neill hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth. It was his first homer as a Tiger.
Missouri advances to the Big 12 Tournament semifinal for the second-straight season. They will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of Friday's Texas Tech and Nebraska matchup.
