Mizzou was well-represented in the 2005 NFL Draft over the weekend, as three Tigers had their names called to give MU its largest pool of draftees in 14 years.
Leading the way was defensive tackle Atiyyah Ellison, who went in the third round with the 89th overall pick to the Carolina Panthers. He'll attempt to make a defensive line that includes standout end Mike Rucker, the older brother of current Tiger tight end Martin Rucker.
Joining Ellison in the draft waters was a pair of juniors who opted to forego their final year of eligibility. The risk paid off for tailback Damien Nash, who was selected in the 5th round as the 142nd overall pick by the Tennessee Titans. He was followed by defensive tackle C.J. Mosley, who went in the 6th round (pick #191) to the Minnesota Vikings.
The last time that MU had more of its players drafted in a single year was 1991, when, in a 12-round draft, Harry Colon (8th round), Tim Bruton (8th), Damon Mays (9th) and Linzy Collins (12th) were selected.
Also noteworthy is the fact that this was the first time since 1981 that Mizzou has had as many as three of its players drafted in the 6th round or higher.
In 1981, MU had five players selected in the 6th round or better, and ended the draft with seven selections overall.
In other NFL news, a trio of Tigers who went undrafted got some good news, as LB James Kinney (Jacksonville Jaguars), CB Shirdonya Mitchell (Miami Dolphins) and TE Victor Sesay (Miami Dolphins) all signed free agent contracts.
