Oldest Two Records In Tiger Track Fall In First Outdoor Weekend

March 27, 2005

STANFORD INVITE Results | TULSA DUALS Results

The two oldest Missouri school records in track and field fell by the wayside this weekend as senior Ryan Hampton broke Kerry Hogan's 1972 record in the 5000-meter run, and junior Valerie Lauver broke Andrea Fisher's 1983 record in the 10,000-meter run at the Stanford Invitational on Friday. Hampton was also one of five Tigers to earn marks good for entry into the NCAA Regional in late-May, with some of Tigers' marks also coming from the Tulsa Duals in Tulsa, Okla. Lauver, with her mark, automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championships.

Lauver (Allen, Texas) battled back, sitting out the indoor season due to injury and personal tragedy, to shave 32 seconds off the school record, improving her personal best in the 10k race by an astonishing 48 seconds to run in 34:07.04. By finishing the race under 34:10, Lauver automatically qualifies for the NCAA Outdoor Championships to be held in early-June in Sacramento. Lauver is the first Tiger since Christian Cantwell in 2003 to automatically qualify for an NCAA Championship.

Hampton (Liberty, Mo.), coming off an All-American performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the distance medley relay, ran the 5000-meter in 14:05.66, to break Missouri's oldest individual record. Kerry Hogan's 14:06.4, time on May 13, 1972, was topped by Hampton who qualified for the NCAA regional with his time.

Also at Stanford, senior Amanda Bales ran the 5000-meter in 16:24.21, setting a new personal best, earning a regional bid. Senior Jill Petersen also qualified for the regional in the 5k with a personal-best time of 16:32.66. Junior Tim Ross jumped to fifth all-time at Mizzou in the 10,000-meter run with a personal-best of 29:47.19.

A majority of the team competed this Saturday at the Tulsa Duals in Tulsa, Okla. The hammer throw competition was held Friday at Stillwater, Okla. The weather in Tulsa was abysmal with temperatures in the low 30s and moderate winds.

The Tigers grabbed event championships from Lindsey Markworth (Lexington, Mo.) who qualified for the regionals in the women's shot put with an all-around personal best, winning throw of 49 feet, 5½ inches (15.07m), topping her outdoor best by 16 inches. Markworth also won the discus toss with a mark of 153-6 (46.79m) and placed fifth in the hammer throw.

Senior Jesse Sims (Paola, Kan.) started the outdoor season well, winning the men's high jump as part of a 1-2-3 Tiger sweep in the event with a regional qualifying mark of 6-10¾ (2.10m). Chris Horn placed second - freshman Jason Miller was third.

In her first competition in a little over a year, senior Jennifer Bennett (Ashland, Mo.) won the women's pole vault with a leap of 12 feet (3.66m).

Moving from the weight to the hammer, Tiger freshman Tyler Dailey and sophomore Bobby Musil took the fourth and fifth spots in Tiger history in the event with third and fourth place finishes. Dailey threw for 182-4 (55.57) - Musil hit 176-6 (53.81).

With the beginning of the outdoor season, a new qualifying format is used aside from the indoor season for advancement to the NCAA Championships. The 10,000-meter run, along with the decathlon and heptathlon, uses the automatic/provisional standard for qualifying to the NCAA Championships - all other events use the regional system, in which an athlete must reach a qualifying standard and at least finish in the top five in that regional meet to move on to the NCAA Championships.

The Tigers move to week two of the outdoor season by hosting the Missouri Relays, featuring Missouri high schools and many local colleges, this upcoming weekend on April 1st and 2nd. More information will be featured soon on mutigers.com.
