Columbia, Mo. -The 13th-ranked Missouri wrestling team topped the No. 24 Tennessee Chattanooga Mocs, 22-15, on senior night in the Hearnes Center. Improving to 14-6 on the season, fifth-ranked senior Tyron Woodley (Ferguson, Mo.) pulled off the night's biggest upset, knocking off No. 3 Jon Sioredas, 3-2, at 165 pounds in Missouri's final home dual of the season.
Wrestling in front of a record-setting 1,436 fans, the seniors honored at the start of the dual proved their value to the team as Cody Greene (149), Brad Cieleski (157) and Tyron Woodley (165) all recorded wins in their respective matches.
Greene (St. Charles, Mo.) put Missouri's first points on the scoreboard for the second time of the 2004-05 campaign. Holding off Wayne French at 149-pounds for the second time of the season, 14-3, the win was Greene's 25th of the season and ninth by major decision. Greene scored his 14 points through three takedowns, a two-point nearfall, one reversal an escape in the third period and 2:08 of riding time.
Cutting the Mocs' lead to within five points, Cieleski (Brookville, Pa.) outscored Jake Yost, 3-1, for his 11th dual victory of the year at 157-pounds. Woodley (Ferguson, Mo.) followed at 165-pounds with his 105th career win earned in a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Sioredas. Woodley and Sioredas have met on two occasions and each holds one win to their name. Last Sunday, Woodley handed then-No. 5 Travis Paulson of Iowa State a 6-2 loss for his first upset of the week, following tonight with his 3-2 victory over No. 3 Sioredas.
"I'm really pleased with the performance our seniors gave us tonight," Head Coach Brian Smith said. "They knew they had to turn it up if they wanted a win, and that's what each of them did. Starting with Cody at 149-pounds, you could just see the momentum building. This is a strong group of seniors, both on and off the mat."
Sophomore co-captain Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) ranked No. 2 in the nation, recorded his 20th fall of the season by pinning Daniel Peterson in 4:48. The win by fall put Missouri in the lead for the first time of the dual. Askren's last pin came on Jan. 29, against Big 12 opponent Marc Harwood of Nebraska. Currently, Askren leads the league in falls overall and in dual competitions.
Missouri's fifth win of the night came from sophomore Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.). Pell dropped John Davis 7-6.
The Tiger's sixth and final win of the evening came from No. 19 Jeff Foust (Blue Springs, Mo.) at 197 pounds. Totaling four takedowns, three of which came in the final two minutes of action, Foust outscored Josh Ward 10-4 to secure the MU victory.
Upon setting a new Missouri wrestling attendance record, Cost-Cutters owner Chuck Crews donated $2,000 to the Missouri Greek Community to put towards their Habitat for Humanity House.
The Missouri wrestling team will wrestle its final dual of the season this Sunday, Feb. 2, against Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill., at 2 p.m. (CT).
