Columbia, Mo. -Missouri junior David Darmitzel (swimming) and sophomore Carlynn Savant (women's basketball) were named this week's Lathrop & Gage student-athlete's of the week for their excellence in the classroom, in their respecitve playing fields and in the community.
Darmitzel is a swimming team co-captain this season and opened his junior campaign with a first place finish in the 3X100-yard butterfly at the Big 12 Relays in Lawrence, Kan., Oct. 15. Also among his accomplishments this season, Darmitzel and his teammates took first in the 4X100-yard medley in the Tigers' first dual win of 2004-05 over Southern Illinois, Nov. 6 along with an individual second place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. Darmitzel holds a 3.77 grade-point average in journalism and is a native of Santa Fe, N.M. Outside of athletics and class, Darmitzel has given his time to the Multiple Sclerosis foundation, riding his bike in the annual MS 150 campaign.
A forward from Euless, Texas, Savant has started in four of the Tigers' seven games this season and averages 7.7 points per game. Savant holds the highest number of rebounds of the team (45) is 5-for-6 on free throws (.833) and is fourth in team scoring with 54 points. Majoring in Psychology, Savant holds a 3.25 grade-point average and dedicates her time to the Starlight Literacy campaign in her down time.
The women's basketball team will take on No. 2 Stanford, Saturday, Dec. 18, at home in the Mizzou Arena at 4 p.m. Tickets are $1 and fans are encouraged to come out and "Pack the Zou" in an attempt to set a new attendance record for a women's basketball game. For fans not able to attend, the game will be televised live on Fox Sports.
Returning to competition on Jan. 14, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will travel to Kirksville, Mo., for a triangular including Truman State and South Dakota.
