Ben Askren's Weekly Journal

Sorry I haven't written in a while, I have been really busy and forgot to do it a couple times, so I will summarize the past couple weeks as well as possible. Two weeks ago was a big week for us. Sunday was the CMSU open and we wrestled pretty well. I won, and 4 other guys did too, overall it was a pretty good performance. Starting the day after that, we were getting ready for the dual meet versus Purdue. We went hard all week until Thursday, when we just drilled to get ready for the Purdue match. The team wrestled really well. We won 7 of the 10 matches. We also had about 1500 fans, and we were really excited about that also. On Saturday we had practice around 3:00 to get ready for the Missouri Open which was Sunday. I did some live afterwards because I was not wrestling in the Missouri Open. Sunday I slept in and hung around the house for a while and came up to the Missouri open around 12:30. I spent the rest of the day coaching the freshman since the coaches aren't allowed to. Most of the freshman did well, some are still timid, but they are improving very quickly. Most of the upperclassmen did well also. Monday was the All-Star match. I slept in and left for SIU-Edwardsville around noon with the coaches and Tyron. We ate lunch and then I relaxed for a while. Around 4:30 we left so I could go make weight. My match didn't go so well, and I really would have liked to do better, but it is still a learning experience and the only match that really matters is March 20. I was very disappointed in my offensive attacks and bottom work, but it gives me something to improve on before the end of the year. Tuesday morning we had a run and lift, and in the afternoon we had a practice. Wednesday we had a practice at 9:00am and the rest of the day off. Thursday morning I came in and lifted with Coach Horton and then went and ate some turkey (Whoohoo!). Friday night we had practice late where we went a lot of live and had a good hard practice. Greg Warren, former MU AA and stand up comedian, was town so the whole team and the coaches went and saw him. He is a very funny guy and I recommend you check him out at his website or on his new CD. He is playing on BET's "coming to the stage" currently. This morning we did a run and lift, it was a good morning, because I got my fastest time ever in the 8 lapper. We have tomorrow off, then a few days to train for Vegas. I can't wait to see the Bright lights of the strip for the big tourney. Who can deny, it's Vegas Baby!
