Columbia, Mo. - Seniors Karen Bauer of the women's soccer team and Ryan Hampton of the MU men's cross country team were named this week's Lathrop & Gage Student Athletes of the Week. Both individuals hold above a 3.0 grade-point average in their respective majors, excel in their field of play and volunteer their time to the surrounding community.
Bauer, of Geneva, Ill., holds a 3.93 grade-point average in biological science and was an active member in the Tigers' annual youth soccer clinic and Truman Club winter party. Wrapping up the 2004 season on Nov. 3, Bauer and her teammates advanced to their seventh straight Big 12 Tournament before suffering a 2-1 loss to Colorado in overtime. During her senior campaign, Bauer scored two goals on the season and was 2-2 on penalty kicks.
A native of Liberty, Mo., Hampton is a music composition major and has a 3.52 grade-point average. Hampton is a 2002 All-Midwest Region and three-time All-Big 12 honoree. Hampton is a two-time USTCA Academic All-American. Over the years, Hampton has given his time to the Ronald McDonald House Benefit.
