STANFORD, Calif. -
Buoyed by the third-best tournament score in Mizzou history, the Tigers tied for fourth place at The Nelson, hosted at the Stanford Golf Club, on Sunday.
A day after firing the second-best single-round score on record, the Tigers finished with a three-day total of 844. That is just six strokes off the school record set in the 1984 All-College Classic. The total is slightly skewed, however, as the tournament is being contested on a par-69 course. Mizzou finished tied with host Stanford at 16-over-par, and 14 strokes behind tournament winner New Mexico.
The Tigers were led by sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS), who shot a career-low round for the second straight day. This time it was a 1-under 68 - his first collegiate round under par - in posting a three-day total of six-over 213. That tied Kelly for 21st place, one spot lower than his previous best last week in St. Charles.
Sophomore Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell North HS / Newman Univ.) earned his first top-10 finish of the year after closing with a 71; Jasper tied for ninth place to shatter his previous best placing this season by seven spots.
Among MU's other golfers, junior Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS) shot a 74 and earned his team-leading third top-25 finish of the year by finishing in a tie for 12th; junior Ben Scott (Lancashire, United Kingdom / St. Theodore's HS) carded a 72 to tie for 37th; and senior Justin Bliss (Chesterfield, Mo. / Lafayette HS) closed with a 77 to tie for 50th.
MU has completed its fall schedule and will resume its spring season Feb. 14-15 at the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla.
