Ben Askren's Weekly Journal

Oct. 10, 2004

This week was a lot of the same as last week, Monday morning run was good, and we did some hand fighting afterwards before our lift. The lift went well; it was hard and quick, because most of us have 9:00 am classes we have to get to. In the afternoon, we did a lot of neutral technique then wrestled live on top and bottom and on our feet for about forty minutes.

Tuesday we did a lot of top and bottom work. As a team, we need a lot of work here, because the incoming freshman really struggle in referee's position and their first tournament is only a few weeks away now. It is really paying off, because I feel the freshman I wrestle live with are improving leaps and bound in referee's position. In live, I went with Raymond Jordan and Coach Burleson. We went hard, Ray is tough and still getting a lot tougher, I really expect big things out of him in the future.

Wednesday morning was a good hard drill for an hour and a half. We went over a lot more top technique as well. In the afternoon, we did plyometrics and lifted.

Thursday we did a lot of feet work and clearing ties, etc. Then we wrestled live and did some conditioning afterwards.

Friday morning we did another run and then worked on shrugs (Coach Waller's favorite move) for a while before we went up and lifted. Friday afternoon we did just a drill practice, where we went for about two hours. It was a good practice.

Saturday we had matches, they were 6 minutes, so we are almost up to full time now. I had a good day of matches, and I got to watch a lot of the younger guys as well and I was impressed with a lot of them. There were also some fathers there to watch. It was great to see fans already taking an interest in the upcoming season. If you get a chance, come watch our practices. Coach Smith said I might be working one of the Tiger Style Fall Clinics this weekend, so I will look for you all there. Ciao!
