Men's Golf Finishes 13th at Notre Dame Intercollegiate

Sept. 19, 2004

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - For the second straight day, junior Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS) shot an four-over-par 74 to lead the University of Missouri men Sunday at the final round of the Notre Dame Invitational.

The tournament, which doubles as a preview for the NCAA Central Regional that the Fighting Irish will host in May, was held at the Warren Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus.

Mabry finished tied for 32nd at 16-over 226 after his second straight 74. Mabry's total put him a total of 17 strokes behind tournament medalist Ryan Yip of Kent State. Yip, the first-round leader, closed with a final-round 69 to hold off Andrew Ruthkoski of Michigan State and Indiana's Jeff Overton, who fired a tournament-best 66 on Sunday.

As a team, the Tigers shot an aggregate 307 and fell to 13th place out of the 15 teams in the field. Kent State held off a furious charge by Michigan State - who shot the tournament's best round by six strokes and the day's best by 10 - to win the team title by two strokes.

Among MU's other individuals, sophomore Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell HS / Newman Univ.) shot his best round of the week and matched his season best with a 75, and finished in a tie for 62nd place; sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS) had a 79 and finished tied for 37th; sophomore Trent Twaddle (Maryville, Mo. / Maryville HS) matched that score and finished in 71st; and junior Ben Scott (Lancashire, United Kingdom / St. Theodore's HS) struggled to an 82 and tied Jasper in 62nd at 235.

"We've got a bunch of talented golfers, but we just need to start playing like it," Head Coach Mark Leroux said. "We've got Memphis up next; hopefully we'll get something going there."

The Tigers are off from competition for the next two weeks until resuming play Oct. 4-5 (Mon.-Tue.) at the Memphis Intercollegiate.
