Sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS) shot an opening-round 74 in the first round of the Notre Dame Invitational.
The tournament, which doubles as a preview for the NCAA Central Regional that the Fighting Irish will host in May, began today with a 18 holes at Lost Dunes Golf Club off of Lake Michigan. It will wrap up over the weekend back on campus at the Warren Golf Course.
Kelly went out in 36 before coming back in 38. He is tied for 14th, which is six strokes behind Ryan Yip of Kent State. Yip, teammate Steve Lohmeyer and Michigan State's Ryan Brehm were the only players to break par on the 6,875-yard, par-70 Lost Dunes course.
As a team, the Tigers shot an aggregate 310, which ties Missouri with Iowa State for 11th place in the 15-team field. Mizzou is just seven strokes from sixth place. Kent State fired a 7-over 287, and holds a seven-stroke lead over Michigan State.
Among MU's other individuals, junior Ben Scott (Lancashire, United Kingdom / St. Theodore's HS) is in a tie for 37th after shooting a 77; junior Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS) is tied for 46th and a stroke behind Mabry; sophomore Trent Twaddle (Maryville, Mo. / Maryville HS) is tied for 67th following an opening 81; and sophomore Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell HS / Newman Univ.) struggled to an 84 and is tied for 78th.
The tournament resumes play tomorrow morning with 18 holes of play before concluding on Sunday.
