PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Missouri track and field team competed Friday in day one of the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The weather was cool most of the day with mostly overcast skies and temperatures in the 60s, priming the Tigers for meet successes. Junior Lindsay Markworth (Lexington, Mo.) qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in her second event with a personal-best of 47 feet, 3? inches (14.41m) in the women's shot put.
Markworth's other regional mark comes from the discus throw, qualifying in that event last weekend at College Station Relays.
Several freshmen had good performances at their first outdoor meet as a collegian: Redshirt freshman Bill Hobson (Katy, Texas) took third in the "B" section of the men's shot put with a personal-best of 56 feet, 5? inches (17.20m) to once again eclipse the NCAA regional qualifying mark. Tipper O'Brien (Kirkwood, Mo.) finished 10th in the men's 1500-meter after a big surge at the finish line to win his heat with a time of 3:52.18. Alison Werner (Danville, Iowa) took fifth in the "B" women's 1500-meter run with a time of 2:13.50.
Senior Gary File (Beloit, Kan.) extended his regional qualifying mark in the javelin with a third place throw of 212 feet, 7 inches (64.81m).
Tiger post-collegian Timothy Dunne (Jerome, Idaho) took top honors in the "B" section of the 1500-meter run, winning in a time of 3:48.68, a career-best. Another Missouri post-collegian, Fiona Asigbee (Walford, Iowa) qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.91.
Due to the length of the tonight's events, going into the 11:00 p.m. hour (1:00 a.m., central), a wrap-up of the second session of day one will be released around 1:30 a.m., central time. A complete wrap-up of the entire meet will be available Saturday evening around 8:00 p.m., central.
After being on the road for five weeks straight, the Tigers will come home to host two meets in a row. Next weekend will be the Missouri Relays, a meet for both high schools and colleges. The next weekend, April 9-10, will be the Tom Botts Invitational and Heptathlon. For more information on these meets including sign up, visit mutigers.com
