The Broncos started the game hitting two runs in the bottom of the first. With a double by junior infielder Kelly Johnson up the left field line, Johnson drove sophomore infielder Jenny Brown and junior infielder Vanessa Werner home for the first scores of the game.
The Tigers were able to put points on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a run by Sarah Stringer. Driven in on a single through the right center by senior right fielder Morgan LeCluyse, sophomore third baseman Kendra Power tied the score at two in the top of the sixth inning with a home run, her first of the season.
A pitching change in the bottom of the fourth inning, brought sophomore Samantha Fleeman to the mound. The Tigers were able to hold the Broncos to three scoreless innings before Santa Clara scored in the bottom of the eighth, en route to the 4-3 win.
Heading into the seventh inning, the teams remained tied at two apiece, taking the game into extra innings.
At the beginning of the eighth inning freshman Leanne Bowers was placed on second and driven home on a hit by junior shortstop Heather Kunkel, putting the Tigers ahead by one point. The Broncos managed to tie the score with a run from sophomore infielder Jenny Brown off of a Tiger passed ball.
In the decisive ninth inning the Tigers placed LeCluyse on second base according to international tiebreaker rules. As freshman infielder Alli Kennewell grounded out to the catcher, LeCluyse tried to steal third base and was caught in a run down, ending the inning with the score tied at 3-3 heading into the ninth. Santa Clara's winning run came on a single up the middle by Shannon Lineurd, allowing sophomore outfielder Jessica Clee to run home for the game wining score.
Both teams entered the contest with two losses from the previous day against Pacific and host school Stanford. The Broncos entered the contest with a record of 2-10 and Tigers with a record of 2-5.
The Tigers will be the fourth seed for bracket play beginning this evening. The Tigers will face either host Stanford University or University of the Pacific.
