COLUMBIA, Mo.--The University of Missouri track and field squad will officially open their 2004 indoor season by hosting the Missouri Invitational on Friday, January 16, in the Hearnes Fieldhouse. The Tigers will be joined in competition by Missouri Valley, Northwest Missouri State, Southeast Missouri State, Missouri-Rolla, UMKC, Oral Roberts, and Haskell University of Kansas.

"This meet is to get the kids back to competing," said Dr. Rick McGuire, head track and field coach at Missouri. "It gets the blood flowing and the interest level back up whenever you have someone to compete with. It breaks the ice on the season."

The meet begins at 4 p.m. with field events. Track events are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

This is the first full-squad meet of the season for the Tigers. Some of Mizzou's throwers participated at the Kansas State All-Comers meet in December. All Tigers entered finished in the top five.

The Missouri Invitational is the first in a line of three consecutive home meets for the Tigers. Next Friday, January 23rd, MU will host the MU-KU-KSU Triangular, hosting Big 12 foes Kansas and Kansas State. The following Friday, January 30th, Missouri will host the Tiger Classic with Nebraska, Wichita State, and Indiana as the guests.
