Update on Joint NCAA/University of Missouri Review

Dec. 4, 2003

The preliminary fact-gathering phase of the review involving the MU men's basketball program is continuing. In September, the NCAA announced its intention to complete its review by December, but MU Director of Athletics Mike Alden said the review continues.

"We hope to bring closure to this as soon as possible, but the length of the current stage of the review is not unusual. MU will continue to cooperate fully with the NCAA as this process continues," he said.

University of Missouri President Elson S. Floyd, along with Alden and other University of Missouri officials visited NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind., today to continue work on the review that is being conducted jointly by MU and the NCAA. The purpose of today's trip was to exchange information regarding the review and to discuss the review process. In the NCAA's September letter, MU officials were encouraged to schedule such a meeting.

Attending today's meeting were Floyd, Alden, MU Associate Athletic Director Sarah Reesman, UM General Counsel Marvin E. "Bunky" Wright and Counsel William F. Arnet.

Due to the confidential nature of the NCAA review process, the University cannot comment further on what was discussed with NCAA officials.

The full NCAA review process is outlined on the NCAA website. For more information on the NCAA enforcement process, please visit the NCAA website at www1.ncaa.org/membership/governance/division_I/FAQ.htm.
