Gold Rallies to Take Victory, 2-0 Lead in Fall World Series

The Mizzou Gold team, already up 1-0 in the Fall World Series, scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 2 on Sunday to send it to extra innings, then scored one in tenth to for the 5-4 win and the 2-0 series lead.

Trailing 4-3 in the ninth, the Gold team scored the game-tying run on a two-out single by Hunter Mense which drove in Jeremy Hernandez.

The Black squad had two runners on with one out in the top of the tenth, but left both runners on base. Adam Garrett led off the bottom of the tenth with a double for the Gold team. He advanced to third on a sacrifice by Dan Pietroburgo and scored the game-winning run on a single by Trevor Helms.

Black took the early lead in the game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning with the help of three errors.

Brad Flanders got the Gold team on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Gold added another run in that frame when Kyle Johnson tripled, then scored on a pass ball.

The Black squad took a two-run lead with James Boone's two-out home run in the top of the third inning. The Mizzou Gold scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one run game leading to the late game heroics.

Flanders was 2-for-4 with the home run on Sunday. Tyler Williams was 2-for-3 for Black with a run scored. Boone finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Garrett Broshuis started on the mound for the Gold team and went 7 innings, giving up five hits and four runs, only one of which was earned. He struck out three and walked one in the no-decision. Matthew Stallings took the win, pitching three innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit.

Gold now holds a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. It will go for the Series win in Game 3 at 6 p.m. on Monday at Taylor Stadium.
