COLUMBIA, Mo. - Sophomore right-hander Garrett Broshuis (Advance, Mo.) scattered eight hits and just one earned run over 7-2/3 innings - his longest outing of the season - and every Tiger starter recorded a hit to lead the Missouri baseball team to its third straight Big 12 series win with an 11-5 decision over No. 23 Texas Tech at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field on Saturday.
Mizzou (23-8, 8-3 Big 12) posted its 11th straight win and eighth straight in conference play to post the program's longest winning streak since the 1988 squad strung together 13 straight wins early in the season. That team finished 42-22 with a berth in the NCAA South Regional. In addition, the Tigers moved to 13-1 at home with the win.
Senior OF Jayce Tingler (Smithville, Mo.) reached base five times on the day, going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Tingler now has a Big 12-leading 27 walks on the year.
For the third straight game, Mizzou held the lead after the first inning. Tingler doubled, and came home on a single by junior SS Ian Kinsler (Tucson, Ariz.). Junior C Brad Flanders (Smithville, Mo.) then singled Kinsler home.
Texas Tech (20-13, 4-7) got a run in the third off Broshuis (5-2) to cut the lead in half, yet Mizzou got the run back in the fifth when Kinsler scored on a two-out single by freshman 3B Zane Taylor (Kirksville, Mo.).
Mizzou broke the game open in the sixth against Tech starter Juan Razo (2-4). Freshman Tyler Williams (Delta, British Columbia) hit a one-out double to score junior OF Ryan Rallo (Chesterfield, Mo.). Junior OF Kyle Johnson (Omaha, Neb.) walked to chase Razo, which started Texas Tech on a carousel of pitching changes that saw two relievers come in to each face one batter; the first walked to load the bases, the last walked to force a run in. After another pitching change, Taylor, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, hit a bases-clearing double down the right-field line.
"We swung the bats well, and we capitalized late in the game," Head Coach Tim Jamieson said. "We got to a point where today might not have been the day [to get a win], but we had a lot of guys contribute when it counted. Garrett Broshuis gave us momentum, and he did exactly what we needed him to do."
Mizzou goes for its third consecutive Big 12 sweep on Sunday at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field on Sunday. Junior Derek Roper (3-1) will go against Tech's Corey Gerstner (2-1) starting at 1 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-800-CAT-PAWS (573-884-PAWS in mid-Missouri).
