Columbia, Mo.- University of Missouri Director of Athletics Mike Alden announced on Tuesday the hiring of Ty Singleton as MU's head softball coach. Singleton most recently served as the head softball coach at Northwestern State University (La.)
"A new era of Missouri softball begins today," Alden said. "We are very excited to have Ty and his family join the athletic department family here at Mizzou. Ty is a dynamic competitor and is a true innovator in the sport of softball. We look forward to the energy and fire he will bring to our program."
Singleton, a 1992 graduate of the University of Portland, has led the Demons of NSU to a 75-45 mark in his two seasons as head coach. In 2002, NSU made its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the past five years. He inherits a Tiger squad that finished 2002 with a 29-33 overall mark and a 4-14 record in the Big 12 under the direction of former head coach Jay Miller, who was relieved of his duties following the '02 campaign.
"This is both a great challenge and an excellent chance to carry on the tradition that Missouri Softball is known for throughout the country," Singleton said. "I would like to thank Mike Alden for this opportunity and we are ready to get started."
The Demons won the 2002 Southland Conference Tournament Championship and finished second in the regular season standings. NSU was 45-25 overall and had a 22-5 league mark. The Demons led the league in nine offensive categories, eight defensive categories and broke 12 school records.
Alongside the Demon's rise to national prominence on the field has come a drastic improvement in the classroom. The Demons have raised the team's grade-point average from 2.20 upon Singleton's arrival to above a 3.0 mark following the spring semester. Fourteen Demons were named to the University Honor Roll in 2002.
Prior to taking over the NSU program, Singleton was an assistant coach at the University of Texas under head coach Connie Clark. While at Texas, he worked primarily with the infielders and hitters where he helped produce seven All-Americans, three Verizon Academic All-Americans and a dozen All-Big 12 Conference selections. He was also an assistant coach at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif., where APU won two Golden State Athletic Conference championships and twice finished fifth in the NAIA National Championships.
He and his wife, Kristin, have one child, Riley Scott (1). Singleton, 31, is a native of the Pacific Northwest and grew up in Vancouver, Wash.
