Holst's 11th-Inning Single Propels Gold to Fall World Series Title

Oct. 30, 2002

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Extra innings for the fans at Wednesday night's Game 5 of the Fall World Series was extra special for the Gold team.

After blowing a 6-0 lead, Gold scored once in the eighth to tie the game, and again in the bottom of the 11th on a two-out single by redshirt freshman CF Josiah Holst, en route to a 9-8 win in the deciding game at Simmons Field.

"When you're in a position like that at the end of the game, you're just looking for a pitch to hit," said Holst, who finished the series with a team-high eight RBI. "I just got lucky, I guess. We knew in the last few innings that somebody was going to have to step up, and there's no better way than in extra innings of the final game."

Freshman 3B James Boone walked to start the frame for the Gold. Junior LF Lee Laskowski - who left the ballpark in the fifth inning to take a test, then returned to the game in the ninth - hit an infield single, advancing Boone to second. Junior C Brad Flanders advanced both Boone and Laskowski on a sacrifice bunt, then freshman SS Adam Garrett grounded out to the pitcher. Yet Holst, who had hit a bases-loaded triple to start a six-run second, sliced a hit into left that scored Boone with the winning run.

"It's the perfect way to end the fall," said head coach Tim Jamieson, who supervised a deciding final game on Wednesday for the first time in his nine falls at Mizzou. "Each out that had an effect on the outcome of the game said something about our team. I'm pleased with the way both teams competed; both teams played well. There wasn't one guy that stood out on that Gold team; it was a total team effort."

Down 7-2 in the sixth, the Black began its first rally when its first four batters reached safely. Sophomore OF Bo Davis walked, followed by three straight singles from senior OF Jayce Tingler, junior SS Ian Kinsler and freshman 3B Zane Taylor, the last of which scored Davis and Tingler. Kinsler then scored on a fielder's choice by freshman OF Tyler Williams.

In the seventh, the Black pulled ahead on back-to-back triples from Tingler and Kinsler, as well as a single up the middle from Taylor. For the night, the leadoff trio of Tingler, Kinsler and Taylor finished 8-for-17 with five RBI and five runs scored. In the five Series games, Kinsler batted a Missouri-high .619 (13-for-21) and was perfect on all four stolen-base attempts.

Mark Alexander (W, 1-1) pitched two innings of one-hit relief in the extra frames to pick up the win, while Danny Hill gave up just the winning run on four hits over the final 2.2 innings.
