COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior OF Jayce Tingler went 5-for-6, with four runs scored and two RBI, to lead the Black team to a 10-3 win over the Gold in Game 4 of the Mizzou Fall World Series at Simmons Field on Tuesday. The Black's win evens the series at two games apiece, setting up Wednesday night's deciding Game 5 at 6 p.m.
The Black's 1-2-3 hitters set the table on Tuesday, going 10-for-16 with eight runs scored and five RBI. Tingler was joined by junior SS Ian Kinsler and freshman 3B Zane Taylor; for the series, the trio are now batting over .500 (30-59) as a group with 10 RBI.
"Our hitters did an outstanding job adjusting to the elements tonight," said head coach Tim Jamieson of a night that saw temperatures dip into the low 40s with a steady evening drizzle. "We thought they gave in to the weather on Sunday, and they spoiled a lot of good pitches tonight. They played well. It sets up a winner-take-all scenario, so the intensity level will be as high as you can hope. When you have a deciding game at stake, you find out what kind of players your team is made of."
The Black team wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. Tingler singled to lead off the game, stole second and scored on Kinsler's single to left center. A groundout by catcher Scott Fisher later in the frame scored Kinsler. Black left the bases loaded in each of the first two innings, however, opening the door for the Gold team to stay in the game early.
Gold's best offensive production came in the third. Freshman 2B Adam Garrett led off with a double, and freshman CF Josiah Holst followed with a single. Garrett scored on junior LF Lee Laskowski's one-out single, and Holst came across on freshman SS James Boone's sacrifice fly. The runs pulled Gold to within one at 3-2.
A two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth blew the game open for Black. The fourth batter in the inning, Tingler drove in sophomore 2B Trevor Helms with a single. Two batters later, Taylor sliced a single that scored both Tingler and Kinsler, and gave Black a 7-2 advantage.
Both team's starting pitchers struggled early. Garrett Broshuis, coming off a seven-inning shutout in Game 1 for the Gold, gave up 11 hits and eight runs in 5.1 innings. Broshuis (L, 1-1) threw 121 pitches, striking out five and walking four. Black's Travis Wendte (W, 1-1) lasted seven innings and gave up two runs, both earned.
Matthew Stallings pitched solidly out of the bullpen for Gold. In 2.2 innings of work, Stallings allowed three hits and two runs, one earned. Alain Quijano pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Black in the eighth, recording a strikeout and two walks, but allowing no hits. Danny Hill pitched the ninth, allowing an earned run before recording three straight outs to end the game.
