Black Evens Fall World Series With 12-11 Comeback Win

Oct. 25, 2002

COLUMBIA, Mo. - A strange night defensively and on the mound resulted in a tied Fall World Series, as the Black staged a 12-11 comeback win over the Gold at Simmons Field Friday night. The series is tied at one game apiece.

With the game tied at 11, freshman RF Tyler Williams led off the bottom of the ninth with a single for the Black team. Williams advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore LF Bo Davis, then took third off a wild pitch from Gold pitcher Mark Alexander (0-1). Sophomore 1B Brent Lacy's pop fly into shallow left was dropped by Gold SS James Boone, allowing the winning run to score.

Junior SS Ian Kinsler finished 4-for-5 on the night for the Black with two runs and two RBI. In all, the Black pounded out 17 hits with six different players tallying at least two hits each. For the Gold, Boone was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

"Generally, if pitching and defense has been a problem all fall, you have to fix it," said head coach Tim Jamieson. "But if you have one night like that, you just chalk it up to how the game goes, so I'm not too concerned about it. I hate to see the game end on a defensive play, but I'm glad the Black won. I always want to see the series evened up after the first two games."

Game two was marked by offensive explosions and defensive shortcomings, as the two teams combined for 23 runs, but just nine earned. Sophomore right-hander Justin James started for the Black, and lasted 5.2 innings. He gave up 10 hits and eight runs - two of them earned. His counterpart on the Gold team, junior Derek Roper, allowed 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) in five innings of work.

The Gold team jumped on the scoreboard first, plating two runs in the top of the second. Jeremy Hernandez scored on a throwing error by Black C Scott Fisher, and Brad Flanders scored on a double play.

The Black team posted its first big inning of the Fall World Series in the third when it batted around. Kinsler singled and stole second to lead off the inning, then was tripled home by 3B Zane Taylor. Freshman OF Tyler Williams doubled Taylor home, and two batters later, 1B Brent Lacy doubled to score Williams and freshman C Scott Fisher. Senior All-Big 12 OF Jayce Tingler then got his first hit of the Fall World Series with a double to left field.

Already up 5-2, the Black team added to its lead in the fifth. With two outs, sophomore 2B Trevor Helms singled, and scored on a error by Gold LF Lee Laskowski. Tingler, who reached on the error, scored on a single by Kinsler.

The Gold team made its comeback in the sixth, sending 13 batters to the plate during the frame. With two outs in the inning, Boone sliced a triple to right that scored Laskowski and RF Kyle Johnson. Yet the scoring binge came later in the inning with two outs. Four straight Gold batters reached successfully before Garrett Bauer was brought in to relieve James. Bauer walked all four batters he faced before being pulled for fellow junior LHP Alain Quijano.

Game 3 of the Fall World Series is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m., with Games 4 and 5 scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 29-30, at 6 p.m.
