COLUMBIA, Mo. - Sophomore RHP Garrett Broshuis threw seven shutout innings without issuing a walk to lead the Gold to a 10-1 win over the Black in the opening game of the 2002 Fall World Series.

Broshuis (W, 1-0) dominated the Black hitters in the early going, facing the minimum 12 batters through the first four innings. He allowed a leadoff single to freshman 3B Zane Taylor in the second inning, but Taylor was doubled off first when freshman RF Tyler Williams lined out to Gold 3B James Boone. Broshuis finished the afternoon by allowing just four hits and striking out five in his seven innings.

After scoring a run in each of the first three innings, the Gold broke the game open in the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Black C Brent Lacy tried to pick freshman Adam Garrett off third base. The throw went wide into left field, allowing Garrett and redshirt freshman Josiah Holst to score. Kyle Johnson, who advanced to second on the error, then came home on a single to center by James Boone.

"I'm pleased with the way the majority of things went today," said head coach Tim Jamieson. "The teams played with focus and intensity, which is pretty much how the whole fall has been. The score is not indicative of how the two teams played today. Cody Ehlers and Lee Laskowski got the job done today, and they're two people we're really going to depend on this year. Garrett Broshuis was just outstanding today."

The Gold opened the scoring in the first when junior OF Lee Laskowski homered down the right-field line. Josiah Holst drove in junior 1B Cody Ehlers in the second, then Ehlers homered to right in the third. Laskowski added a bases-loaded double in the eighth to finish 2-for-5 with four RBI, while Ehlers finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Travis Wendte (L, 0-1) allowed six runs, three earned, on nine hits over six innings. He walked a batter and struck out six.

The two teams return to the field Friday evening at 6 p.m. for game two before taking Saturday off for the Homecoming festivities at Ol' Mizzou. Sunday's game three, the only afternoon game of the Fall World Series, will start at 1 p.m.
