Port St. Lucie, Fla. - After racing to an impressive second place finish two weeks ago at the Shootout at the Legends, the University of Missouri women's golf team continued its red-hot play and is currently tied with Baylor with a five shot lead after the first two rounds of the adidas Fall Invitational. The tourney is being held at the par-72 PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Mizzou fired an opening-round total of 305 putting them in fourth place, but came out en fuego in round two with a tourney-best round of 297 for a Day 1 total of 602.
Head coach Stephanie Cooper said that the Tigers' got great contribution from everyone in the lineup once they figured out the lay of the land.
"It took some time to figure out the greens and get a feel for the course and I think we did that by the end of the first round," Cooper said. "I was extremely pleased the effort the whole squad put forward; from our senior leader to the freshman, everyone was focused and played good golf."
The Tigers' lone senior, Elin Ohlsson continued her quest for her first career tourney win and put herself in great position to accomplish that feat shooting rounds of 74 and 72, putting her in a tie for third place after Day 1. Dating back to her final round at the Shoot at the Legends two weeks ago, Ohlsson has shot rounds of 72-74-72, just two over par for three rounds.
After shooting well in the opening tournament of her career, which was also the Mizzou's first tournament of the season at the Chip N-Club in Lincoln, Neb., freshman Stephanie Turner had struggled in the last three tourneys. However, the Indiana native shook the rust on Monday firing rounds of 75, which equaled her career-best round and 74, which eclipsed her career mark, and is tied for sixth heading into the final day.
Sophomore Maria Ohlsson was consistent as she fired consecutive rounds of 77 putting her in 18th while junior Mindy Bullard rebounded nicely from an opening round of 82 to shoot a 74 for a two-round total of 156 putting her in a tie for 24th.
Freshman Denise Knaebel is in 31st (79-80=159) while fellow frosh Kelli Strubinger is in 40th after Day 1 after rounds of 86 and 78.
The Tiger's will tee of on 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday for the final round of the Invitational. For complete results of the tourney, log on to www.mutigers.com at around 6 pm on Tuesday evening.
