Football Practice Report for August 20th

Aug. 20, 2002

Columbia, Mo. - The Missouri Tiger football team took to the Devine Pavilion for an indoor practice on Tuesday, marking the third straight day that wet grounds forced Mizzou inside.

A spirited practice was held Tuesday morning, as the Tigers continue preparations for their last pre-season scrimmage, to be held Thursday morning at Faurot Field.

Here were a few random highlights of scrimmaging held on Tuesday:

*- QB Brad Smith had a long pass over the middle to WR Thomson Omboga, who would have likely gone the distance, before whistles blew the play over. Smith later hooked up with WR Shirdonya Mitchell over the middle for a nice gain that Mitchell extended with a nice run down the right sideline.

*- QB Kirk Farmer found WR Tay Jackson for a nice 12-yard TD pass.

*- TB Zack Abron had several strong runs, including a 15-yard jaunt off right end.

*- OS Orlando Gooden recovered a fumble and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

*- WR Darius Outlaw caught a nicely-thrown TD pass in the back of the endzone from Santino Ricco that covered 15 yards. Riccio later hooked up with WR Chris Crosby for a good gain on the left sideline.

Mizzou has two practices scheduled for Wednesday. Thursday's scrimmage, set for 10 a.m., is closed to the public.

NOTES

*-DT Zach Ville, who had an appendectomy last week after experiencing severe stomach pains, got out of the hospital and returned to camp this afternoon in time to join his teammates for lunch. It is unknown when Ville will be able to return to practicing with the team.

*-LB Elgin Childress missed practice due to his mildly separated right shoulder, an injury he picked up in Saturday's scrimmage at Faurot Field. No timetable is set right now for his return to the field.

*-OS Safety Brian Fuller's MRI showed no extensive damage to his injured knee, and he will not require surgery.

*-K Mike Matheny sat out Tuesday's practice due to a hip flexor injury, as did P Todd Gohsler, who has a similar injury.

*-The announcers for the ABC telecast of the Missouri-Illinois game will be Mike Tirico (play-by-play) and former Nebraska and NFL standout Irving Fryar (color).
