Columbia, Mo. - University of Missouri Head Baseball Coach Tim Jamieson announced today that assistant coach Chal Fanning has left his staff to take a similar position at California Polytechnic State University, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Fanning, who served as MU's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the past six seasons, will return to his alma mater, where he was a standout pitcher on a Cal-Poly team that reached the 1992 NCAA Division II College World Series.
Since his arrival at Missouri in 1996, Channing helped develop the Tiger pitching staff into one of the Big 12 Conference's best units. He's developed four pitchers who have been named freshmen All-Americans in the past six years, including reliever Travis Wendte, who was named to the 2002 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team.
"We're very sorry to see Chal go, but this is certainly a good opportunity for him to get back to his alma mater," said Jamieson. "He's done a great job with our pitchers and recruiting over the last six years. We wish him the best," he said.
