COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 25 Oklahoma State hit three home runs and got a solid pitching performance from Nick McCurdy as the Cowboys recorded a 15-1 win in seven innings Sunday in Big 12 Conference action at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field. The game was called after seven innings due the 10-run mercy rule in the Big 12.
Jayce Tingler reached on a bunt single in the third inning to extend his hit streak to a career-best 23 games. The Missouri record is 26 games shared by Grant Ingram (1994) and Shane Fairbanks (1981).
Oklahoma State erupted for six runs in the fourth inning. After one out, OSU used five hits and four walks to plate six runs. Jeff Salazar had a three-run double for the inning's big blow.
The Cowboys used a single, a two-base throwing error and a sacrifice fly to take a 7-0 lead. Missouri answered by taking advantage of two OSU errors and two walks to plate a run. OSU used five hits to plate four runs in the sixth frame to take an 11-1 lead. The Cowboys added four runs in the seventh on a pair of two-run, pinch-hit home runs.
Abel Newton falls to 4-4 with the loss. After throwing three scoreless innings, Newton gave up four walks and five hits in the fourth inning and was lifted from the contest. McCurdy improved to 4-0 with the win for the Cowboys.
Missouri, now 23-24 overall and 9-14 in Big 12 play will play Southeast Missouri State at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Tuesday at 5 p.m. Southeast Missouri State leads the Ohio Valley Conference with a 24-15 record entering the Indians' game on Sunday.
