Lawrence, Kan. -- The first day of events for the Tigers is over, and two more days of races and field events are still to come in the 75th Annual Kansas Relays.
In the first day of competition, senior Micah Shanks placed second in the men's hammer with his throw of 195-7. Kansas senior Scott Russell won the event with a 206-5 toss. Freshman Adam Burla placed 14th with his personal-best mark of 161-9.
In the women's hammer, Holly Scherder led the way with a 13th-place finish (143-5) for the Tigers.
In Thursday races, freshman Lesley Smith placed seventh overall in the women's unseeded 1500m run, as she crossed the finish line in a time of 4:50.37. Elizabeth Robbins was 15th in the women's unseeded 800m (2:24.65) and Matt Whitehead placed 16th in the men's unseeded 800m(1:57.98).
