Tigers Compete Well in Carbondale Despite Cold Conditions

Carbondale, Ill. -- The temperatures were not what one would expect during the first official weekend of spring, but Missouri Track & Field athletes overcame the cool conditions and had a successful weekend at the Saluki Spring Classic at Southern Illinois University Friday and Saturday.

The meet went well for a number of Mizzou athletes who won their events and had career bests during the weekend.

Sophomore Janae Strickland won the women's shot put with her mark of 48-10.75. Her throw was an NCAA provisional mark and her outdoor shot put personal best. Carla Grewe was second in the discus, throwing 152-9, her career best. Lindsey Markworth was fifth (143-4) and Heather Whitehead was seventh (141-0) with both having personal best throws in the event.

Junior Amy Semith won the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:12.01, her personal best in the event. Also in her outdoor season debut, sophomore Christi Myers took the women's high jump title as the only competitor to clear 5-8.75.

In the only women's event Friday, sophomore Holly Scherder won the women's hammer throw with her personal-best mark of 168-9.
