Men's Golf Finishes Matlock Invitational in Fifth

Feb. 19, 2002

Lakeland, Fla. __ - The University of Missouri men's golf team wrapped up competition at the 15-team Matlock Invitational, held at Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland, Fla., firing a final round score of 294 to finish in fifth place. Mizzou's finished 10 shots behind team champion Tulsa, who shot a three-day total of 873 to take the title

Senior Mark McBride (Lebanon, Mo.) led the way individually for Missouri through out the tournament, but struggled in the final round. After he carded a two-under par 70 and an even-par 72 in the first two rounds held yesterday, McBride shot a 78 in the penultimate round giving him a total of 220 and a team-best 13th place finish. McBride's final tally was 10 shots behind individual champion Steve Sokol (Florida Southern), who shot a final round 71 on the day and slated a three-day total of 210. Sophomore Brandon Knaub (Seven Valleys, Pa.) had a superb final round for Mizzou firing an even par 72, putting him in a tie for 13th with McBride. Knaub had a brilliant first round yesterday (71) but stumbled in the second round carding a 77.

Junior Chris Happ (Winnetka, Ill.) shot totals of 72, 77 and 72 and clawed himself from 20th after the first two rounds into a tie for 16th after the final round.

Ben Scott (Lancashire, United Kingdom) and sophomore Michael Radek wrap up the Missouri scoring putting in final rounds of 74 and 76 respectively finishing in 31 and 33 place. The Tigers will now travel to the "Border War" tournament in Pensacola, Fla., on Mar. 2nd and will also play in the West Florida Classic on Mar. 4-5.
