
Tigers Move to 2-0 in Mountaineer Invitational

Morgantown, WV.- The University of Missouri volleyball team climbed the hill that was the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday night and swept WVU, 3-0. The Tigers are now 2-0 in the five-team Mountaineer Invitational and are 5-0 in the past two seasons during season-opening tournament play.
Coach Susan Kreklow said that the Tigers evening effort was much improved from the afternoon. "We were more focused tonight and played a complete match," Kreklow said. "Our ball control was much more consistent and we played with better offensive tempo."
Sophomore setter Chrissy Elder had her best match of her career for Mizzou. The Kansas City, Mo. Native passed out 36 assists while coming up with a career-high 18 digs. Elder also had four kills. Junior Lisa Morris rebounded from a un-Lisa like performance in the afternoon match and put down 15 kills and recorded a .333 hitting percentage on the evening.
The Tigers played a solid Game 1 taking the game 30-22. Junior Christi Myers continued her good play from earlier in the day putting down four kill in Game 1 while also slating two block assists. Senior Katie Sowers was outstanding in the back row picking up six digs in the game.
In Game 2, WVU ran out to a 9-7 lead, but Mizzou stormed back to take the game, 30-19. Junior Katherine Wingert provided a spark off of the bench serving three straight points including a service ace and also slated four digs. Sophomore Ashlee Johns also made her presence felt as a substitute putting down four kills in the game. Game 3 was a dead heat at 10 apiece until the Tigers went on a 20-16 run to win Game 3, 30-26,and take the match, 3-0.
The Tigers are now 2-0 on the season and will take the court for a Sunday morning brunch match-up with the Zips of Akron at 10:00 a.m. EST on Sunday.
