Columbia, Mo. - In every tournament so far this year, the Tigers (8-14) have split their two first-day games. The same would hold true again as the Tigers hosted the first day of the Missouri Round Robin Friday.
In their first outing of the day, the Tigers fell to Iowa State 6-4 in eight innings. Iowa State scored first in the second inning off a Tiger error, but the Tigers rallied in the third, scoring two runs off hits by freshman Rachael McGinnis and junior Erin Erickson to take the 2-1 lead. The Tiger lead would hold until the sixth, when Cyclone catcher Mindy Ogan singled to right center field to drive in designated player Erica Martinez and tie the game.
In the first extra inning, the Cyclones capitalized off two Tiger errors and a double by Ogan, scoring four runs to take the 6-2 lead. The Tigers fought back in the bottom half of the eighth, scoring two runs with two out off hits by senior Karen Williams and sophomore Kristin Burke. The third out came sooner than any more Tiger runs, though, and the Tigers lost 6-4.
The second game would prove more fruitful for the host team as they faced Tennessee-Martin. The Tigers came out swinging, and McGinnis drove in junior Lindsey Jacoby off a double that followed down the left field line. Then in the same inning, sophomore designated player Melanie Fisher drove a homerun over the left field wall that scored two.
The Tigers held the Skyhawks scoreless for five innings, but in the sixth Tennessee-Martin scored four to tie the game off a two-run homer by Courtney Wilson and a two-RBI single by shortstop Angela Baize.
With the score tied in the bottom of the sixth, junior Heather Allister popped a single down the right field line that scored junior Mary McGrane and Erickson. That would be all the Tigers would need, as they held the Skyhawks scoreless in the seventh to win the game 6-4.
The Tigers are back in actions tomorrow for the second day of the Missouri Round Robin. Mizzou faces Indiana State at noon and Tennessee-Martin at 2 p.m. All the Tiger action can be heard on 88.1 FM KCOU, or online at www.KCOU.com.
