Columbia, Mo. - The Tiger softball team (8-14) ended the second day of the Missouri Round Robin with smiles on their faces, having just completed their first tournament day of the season without a loss.
The Tigers first defeated the Sycamores (4-10) from Indiana State 5-1. The scoring started early--in the first inning, freshman Rachael McGinnis hit a single to drive in senior Karen Williams. Sophomore Melanie Fisher also hit a single, this time down the right field line, which would drive in McGinnis for the second run of the inning. Indiana scored one in the bottom of the first off a Tiger error.
Missouri notched another run in the top of the second off an error by the Sycamore catcher, and would score two in the third off hits by junior Heather Allister and Fisher. The Tiger defense held Indiana State scoreless the rest of the game. Werner pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits in 26 batters faced.
In their second game of the day the Tigers faced Tennessee-Martin for the second time in the tournament. On Friday, the Tigers eked out a victory over the Skyhawks 6-4, mainly due to a hit in the sixth inning which drove in two to break the tie. Saturday, Missouri showed the Skyhawks the power of a fully operational offense, defeating UTM 15-0 in five innings. The Tigers batted through the lineup nearly every inning, scoring four runs in each of the first three innings and three runs in the fourth. McGinnis, Fisher, and senior pitcher Stephanie Falk all hit for extra bases. Falk pitched, allowing just two hits and walking one in seven innings of work.
Fisher had a very successful afternoon, hitting 5-6 with two hits for extra bases and three RBI. McGinnis also performed well, going 5-8 on the day with two extra bases and a one-day season team high eight RBI.
The Tigers end the Missouri Round Robin tomorrow with games against Iowa State at 2 p.m. and Indiana State at 4 p.m. All Tiger softball action can be heard on 88.1 KCOU FM or at www.KCOU.com.
