Missouri Throwers Start Indoor Season in Style

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The throwers of the Missouri Men's Track & Field team set the tone of the 2001-2002 indoor season with their marks at the Kansas State All-Comers Meet Friday in Manhattan, Kan.

Junior Christian Cantwell got down to business as he automatically qualified for the NCAA meet with his first-place throw in the shot put of 64-6.5. Cantwell's mark set the KSU meet and indoor records. Junior Russ Bell placed third (55-6.5) and senior Micah Shanks placed fourth (52-8.75). The three throwers were the only Missouri athletes at the meet.

Cantwell, Bell and Shanks had success in the weight throw, sweeping the top three spots. All three hit NCAA provisional-qualifying marks in the process. Cantwell won the event with a 67-7.5 mark, followed by Bell (64-1.75 and Shanks (63-3.5).
