Oct. 7, 2001

Columbia, Mo.-The University of Missouri softball team took the championship of the first annual Tiger Charity Softball classic on Sunday evening, defeating the University of Missouri-Kansas City, 9-4. The Tigers went 4-0 on the weekend and improved to 8-0 during the fall. The Tigers were also able to collect over $1,000 dollars in donations that will be given the American Cancer Society. Head coach Jay Miller said he was very pleased with the results of the tournament both on the field and off.

"It was a great weekend of softball and we were able to contribute to very worthy cause," Miller said. "We hope this will become an annual tradition and will continue to generate awareness of cancer research and women's softball as well."

Mizzou capped of the two-day tournament with a come-from behind win over the Kangaroos. UMKC scored four runs in the top of the third and took a 4-0 lead. However, Mizzou would answer with five runs of its own in the bottom of the inning and would tack on four more runs in the next three innings to take the game, 9-4. Junior Kristen Burke and senior Lindsey Jacoby provided the offensive firepower for Mizzou recording two doubles apiece while both going 2-for-3. Jacoby also had four RBI on the evening while senior Heather Allister also had a solid evening going 2-for-2 at the plate.

Several Tigers had big tournaments including freshman pitcher Erin Kalka, who worked 17 innings on the weekend and gave up only eight hits and one earned run. Kalka now sports a miniscule 0.23 ERA and has allowed only 12 hits in 30.2 innings of action so far this fall. Junior Rachael McGinnis also played well this weekend going 6-for-14 while driving in six RBI for the weekend.
