COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's basketball team took to the Hearnes Center floor Wednesday night in the "Tiger Night of Terror" scrimmage.
With the 12-player roster split between the two squads, the Black team needed overtime and a last-second shot to go awry to record a 48-46 victory over the White squad.
The Black squad opened an early 14-4 lead. Natalie Bright hit back-to-back three-point field goals to start the run. Wannette Smith and Evan Unrau each scored four points in the early going. Smith and Tracy Lozier would eventually lead the Black team in scoring as each player finished with 12 points.
"We're going to need to look for points from a lot of different people and in a lot of different situations," said Bright. "I think a lot of people stepped up and showed that they can score for us, like Terianne (Wolford), Wannette (Smith) and Melanie Fisher. We're going to look for other people to get the bulk of points for us this year.
A pair of three-point possessions - one on a three-point play and the other coming via a three-point field goal - allowed White to trail 21-18 at the half.
A three-point field goal by Kerensa Barr allowed White to take its first lead of the game, 30-28, with seven minutes and 32 seconds remaining in regulation. The two squads battled back and forth before a layup by Melanie Fisher tied the game, 43-43, with just over one minute remaining.
In overtime, Terianne Wolford got things started with a three-point field goal - her third of the night - to give White a 46-43 lead. Black took the lead on a three-point field goal by Lozier to make it 48-46. White missed three three-point field goals in the final minute to give Black the win.
Barr finished the night with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds while Fisher added 10 points for the White.
"I recognize my role on the team. I've been here for a couple of years, so I feel like it's my duty to step up and be more vocal on the floor and also step up and take up some of the scoring," said Smith, who led the Black with six rebounds. "We probably won't have two dominant players scoring. Scoring will probably to come from everybody."
"I'm excited," replied MU head coach Cindy Stein when asked about what could she expect in the future after watching the scrimmage. "I can't say that after our practices I've been excited. I feel like we've been doing a lot of teaching. We're a little bit behind where I want to be. But then you watch them tonight and they are actually doing what we've been teaching. We can't accept the work ethic and intensity. We need to step it up every practice and every game.
"I was pleased with the teamwork and working together," continued Stein. I was pleased with Wannette's play, she had not been playing like that in practice. I was pleased with how we were running the floor and some of our defensive things. I saw some thing defensively, positioning thing that are keys to success. The puzzle is not whole but we have a great start."
Missouri plays Lincoln (Mo.) Friday in a 7 p.m. exhibition game at the Hearnes Center.
