COLLEGE STATION, Texas - After holding onto first place for three days, the University of Missouri men's track and field team finished third at the Big 12 Championships here Saturday evening.
The MU men scored 91 points to finish behind Big 12 Champion Texas A&M (159) and Texas (120.5). Sophomore Christian Cantwell added his name to the list of Tiger conference champions. He won the shot put with a mark of 62-1 and was followed by teammate and fellow sophomore Russ Bell who recorded a 61-7. Cantwell joined Knut Harald Sommerfeldt (decathlon), Mike Pitts (10,000m) and Jay Meystedt as Big 12 Champions.
The Missouri women finished in ninth place and scored 52.65 points. Kerry Hils and Ann Marie Brooks set stadium records en route to their individual wins. Hils won the steeplechase in 10:28.82, while Brooks brought home the gold in the 5000m with a time of 16:29.40.
Next up for the Tigers is the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., May30-June 2. Missouri has three athletes that have automatic qualifying marks, but overall there are nine Tigers that have posted qualifying marks.
