Missouri Men In First Place After First Full Day Of Competition

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Missouri men's track and field team scored 34 points and is in first place after three events at the 2001 Big 12 Conference Championships.

Junior Mike Pitts won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:25.03 and picked up 10 points for the Tigers. Sophomore Knut Harald Sommerfeldt also racked up 10 points for MU winning the decathlon with 7,531 points. The Missouri sophomore throwing tandem of Russ Bell and Christian Cantwell finished second and third respectively and scored a total of 14 points.

On the women's side, the Tigers are tied for sixth place overall with nine points. The women were led by sophomore Amy Chipman's fifth-place finish in the 10,000m (37:22.89). Freshman Katherine Bonugli finished seventh (37:48.35). Chipman scored four points, while Bonugli put up two points. Senior Eli Sommerfeldt turned in an seventh-place performance in the heptathlon (5,463 points, two team points), while fellow senior Michelle Moran finished eighth (5,377, one team point).

The Tigers return to action tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with the women's final in the discus.
