Men's Golf Stands 9th After 1st Day at Big 12 Championships

April 23, 2001

Hutchinson, Kan. - The University of Missouri men's golf team shot team rounds of 320 and 324 today in cold and windy conditions, and stands in ninth place through two of play at the 2001 Big 12 Championships, being held at Prairie Dunes Golf and Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The final round of competition gets underway tomorrow at 8 a.m.

With three of five players in the lineup touring Prairie Dunes for the first time, Mizzou stood eighth after the first round. But Head Coach Tim Robyn's squad couldn't improve on its morning score, and slipped one spot to ninth after the afternoon round. Missouri is looking to improve on its ninth-place finish from a year ago.

Individually, junior Mark McBride led the way for MU. The Lebanon, Mo. native shot rounds of 79 and 76 for a two-round total of 155. That left him in a five-way tie for 12th place, just two shots out of fifth place. Worth Williams of Baylor leads all golfers with a total of 144, while Baylor leads the team competition, at 606, trailed by Texas (2nd - 609) and Colorado (3rd - 614). McBride's highest finish at the Big 12 championships was a 30th place showing last year.

Junior Chris Happ was next for the Tigers, as his two-round score of 163 left him tied for 41st place. Happ recovered from an opening-round 85 to post a 78 in the afternoon, when conditions lightened a bit. Golfers battled wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour, and played in temperatures in the 40s early on, before warming into the 60s in the afternoon.

A pair of Tiger freshmen were right behind Happ, in Michael Radek and Brandon Knaub. Radek opened with a 76, and was tied for 6th early on, but slipped to post an 88 in the afternoon. His two-round total of 164 puts him in a tie for 47th place heading into tomorrow's final round. Knaub shot rounds of 83 and 82 for a total of 165 which left him alone in 50th place.

Senior Tom Vogt rounded out the Tiger lineup, as he shot rounds of 82 and 89 for a 171 total which left him in 58th place.
