COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Missouri baseball team scored three runs in the first inning against Iowa State and went on to record a 7-3 triumph Saturday in a Big 12 Conference game at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field.
After a 1-2-3 inning by starting pitcher Matt Hobbs, Missouri scored three runs in the first inning. Jayce Tingler walked before Ryan Stegall hit a two-run home run. The homer was the 27th of Stegall's career. Mick Weiss doubled and scored on a single by Jon Williams as Mizzou took a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Stegall led off the third inning with a single. After a passed ball, Stegall went to third base on a single by Mick Weiss. Lee Laskowski drove home Stegall with a sacrifice fly and Wes Fewell knocked in Weiss with a single to right field for a 5-0 advantage.
Missouri made it 6-0 in the sixth inning. Brian Desch reached on an error, moved to second on a balk and scored on a W.T. Hoover single.
Iowa State used a pair of hits and a Missouri error to score two runs in the seventh inning and cut the Tigers' lead to 6-2.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the seventh inning and Fewell scored when Tingler walked. Tingler now has 32 runs batted in the season, a personal best.
Iowa State scored a run in the ninth inning to make the final 7-3. Missouri improves to 24-17-1 overall and 9-14 in the Big 12. Iowa State is 16-20-1 overall and 7-9 in league play.
Tingler also stole a base in the contest to give him 17 on the season, tying him for sixth place all-time with Tom Ciombor (1987) and Dave Silvestri (1988) on the single-season chart. Tingler now has 31 stolen bases in his career, seventh-most at Missouri.
Tingler, Stegall, Weiss and Williams each had two hits for the Tigers. Matt Hobbs struck out seven batters and improved to 7-3 with the win.
The series is scheduled to wrap up Sunday at 1 p.m.
