MU's Tingler (co), BU's Williams, A&M's Deininger Named As Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Players, Pitcher of Week

March 26, 2001

DALLAS-Baylor senior third baseman Matt Williams of Long Beach, Calif., joins Missouri soph outfielder Jayce Tingler of Smithville, Mo., and Texas A&M soph pitcher Todd Deininger of Joliet, Ill., as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting by a select panel of media covering Big 12baseball for games played from Mar. 19-25.

Williams came within a triple of hitting for the cycle in Baylor's 12-0 win at Kansas last week to highlight a 10-for-18 week(.556 average). He helped the Bears go 3-1 with their only loss 8-7 in 10 innings at No. 1 Rice last Tuesday night. He had three home runs, 11 RBI, a 1.278 slugging percentage, four doubles, and a stolen base while handling 10 chances without an error at third base.

Tingler posted very similar numbers with a .588 batting average (10-for-17), seven RBI, and an on-base percentage of .688 as he notched a trio of three-hit games. Two of Tingler's tri-hit performances came at No. 4 Nebraska where the Tigers won twice in three games against the Top 10 opponent and previously-unbeaten (4-0) in Big 12 play Huskers. The Tigers' standout stole five bases in six attempts and walked five times while driving in the decisive third run in Mizzou's 3-2 win over the Huskers last Sunday. He paced MU in hits, stolen bases and RBI during the five-gamespan.

Deininger turned in one of the top complete-game outings in the conference this year with a two-hit shutout at Kansas State last Saturday. He faced four betters over the minimum for a nine-inning contest and did not allow a runner to reach second base. The righthander struck out four, walked three and notched his second CG of the year to tie for second place in route-going performances with five other Big 12 starts in 2001.
