Columbia, Mo. - The Mizzou softball team (18-15) split with Indiana State Monday afternoon, first winning a game 9-1 from the Mizzou Round Robin that was suspended due to darkness, then falling 4-1 to the Sycamores in the second game of the day.
In order to complete the first game, the Tigers would only need one inning. The Tigers led Indiana State 8-1 with the bases loaded and two outs when the game was called on March 11. MU scored one run off an illegal pitch to invoke the eight-run mercy rule in the fifth inning.
On March 11, the Tigers scored the bulk of their runs (six) in the fourth inning. Stephanie Falk hit a two-RBI double that scored shortstop Lindsey Jacoby and right fielder Heather Allister. Two batters later, catcher Mary McGrane scored off a wild pitch. Third baseman Rachael McGinnis singled to right-center field, scoring Sara Vassmer. The final run came in on an illegal pitch.
Falk tossed a complete game no-hitter, the first of her career.
The Tigers did not fare as well in their second game against the Sycamores. Mizzou's lone run would come in the second inning when McGinnis scored from third base off a throwing error by the shortstop.
Indiana State, on the other hand, would score four runs in three different innings. One run came off a solo home run in the fourth, and three more scored off single base hits in the sixth and seventh. The Sycamores out-hit the Tigers 6-12.
Mizzou is back in action this weekend as they open their conference schedule against Nebraska at home on March 24 and 25. Both games will begin at 1 p.m., and can be heard on 1580 KTGR AM or www.KTGR.com.
