Women's Track and Field Finishes 2001 Indoor Season Ranked 10th

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's track and field team received 18 votes and finished the 2001 indoor season ranked 10th in the final Trackwire .com national poll.

The Tigers scored 21 points en route to a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., Mar. 9-10. The women's distance medley relay team, composed of seniors Ashley Wysong and Sunny Gilbert, junior Ann Marie Brooks and sophomore Kerry Hils, won the national championship in a school-record time of 11:06.77. Mizzou finished six seconds behind the American collegiate record of 11:00.71 (set by Villanova in 1987) and finished five seconds ahead of the second-place team of North Carolina.

Wysong also earned her fifth individual career All-American accolade with a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.37. Brooks earned her first individual All-American honor by placing second in the 3000 with a time of 9:12.43.

The Missouri men's team did not score at the NCAA Championships. Sophomore thrower Christian Cantwell placed ninth in the weight throw (68-1).

Missouri opens the 2001 outdoor track and field season at the Stanford Invitational Mar. 31-Apr. 1.
