MU Softball Drops two at Leadoff Classic

Feb. 25, 2001

COLUMBUS, Ga.- The University of Missouri's softball team went 0-2 in the second day of the Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga on Saturday, bringing their weekend record to 1-3 and their overall record to 5-9.

In their first game of the day and the last game of pool play, the Tigers fell to Michigan by a score of 1-0. Senior pitcher STEPHANIE FAULK pitched a solid game, allowing just three hits and one walk in seven innings of work. Unfortunately for the Tigers, one of those hits was a solo homerun by Wolverines' leftfielder MELINDA MOULDEN, which would prove to be all Michigan needed to hold for the victory.

In the first game of bracket play, Mizzou faced a DePaul, a familiar opponent for the Tigers. MU was tough early, holding the Blue Demons scoreless in the first three innings. Junior catcher MARY MCGRANE made a key out in the first inning, picking off DePaul's LIZ BOUCK as attempted to steal second base. DePaul scored two runs in the fourth inning and with two out in the inning, the Blue Demons' SARAH DOUGLAS hit a single to right field that drove in three runs. DePaul added another tally in the fifth inning giving them a 6-0 advantage. The Blue Demons' held the Missouri offense scoreless.

On Sunday, Missouri faces nationally-ranked Fresno State at 9:00 a.m. The Bulldogs beat the Tigers 2-0 on Friday in pool play.
