Missouri vs. Iowa State
Missouri (13-5) continues Big 12 Conference play backed by its most impressive league start in history. The Tigers are coming off a 65-58 victory over Nebraska taking their first win over the Huskers in Lincoln, Neb., in over 10 years. Missouri also owns an impressive 65-60 come-from-behind victory over Kansas State. The Tigers are 4-3 in conference play, also including wins over Texas (68-52) and Texas A&M (69-61). Iowa State currently leads the Big 12 with a 6-1 league record, going 16-2 overall. The Cyclones succumbed 79-74 to Baylor for their only conference loss. ISU also fell to No. 4 ranked Duke (81-63). Iowa State is currently ranked seventh in the country with wins over No. 22 North Carolina State (71-64) and No. 13 Oklahoma (81-79).
The MU-ISU game will be decided on the boards. In their last match-up, the Cyclones pulled down 50 rebounds while the Tigers had 34. Iowa State is second in the conference with a +9.6 rebounding margin. Missouri averages 43.3 rebounds per game and posts a +4.2 rebounding margin. The Tigers are also third in the league in offensive (16.33) and fifth in defensive rebounds (26.94). The Cyclones are fourth in defensive rebounds (27.67) and 11th in offensive boards (12.31).
Another factor in the game will be the Tigers' characteristic attack of the basket. One of the key components in many of MU's close games this season has been repeated shot attempts. Although the Tigers only post a .445 field goal percentage, the Tigers have out shot their opponents 544-1,223 to 418-1,092. MU only averaged 37 percent from the field against ISU earlier this year, but out shot the Cyclones 28-24, with 75 shot attempts.
Missouri continues to improve its turnover ratio. In their first Big 12 game, MU had 26 turnovers against Texas Tech. Since then, the Tigers have kept their turnovers to 15 or fewer. Missouri recorded its lowest turnover mark of the season against Nebraska with eight. In Big 12 play, MU is fourth with a 1.00 assist to turnover ratio and seventh with a +1.57 turnover margin. Iowa State is third in assist/turnover ratio (1.12) and eighth in turnover margin (-1.43).
Scouting the Cyclones
Iowa State has four athletes on its roster averaging over 12 points per game. Junior center Angie Welle leads the Cyclones with 18.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. She also leads the team shooting 68 percent from the field netting 126-of-184 shots. Welle tops the Big 12 charts in field goal percentage and defensive rebounds. She is second in overall rebounding and ranks fifth in the league in scoring.
Lindsey Wilson is second on the team with 14.0 points per game. The guard serves as Iowa State's floor leader. She has 97 assists on the team and averages 2.1 rebounds per game. Wilson is fourth in the Big 12 with 5.39 assists per game and is 12th in overall scoring. Megan Taylor is third on the team with 13.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She is 13th in the Big 12 in scoring and first in free throw percentage (.863). Tracy Gahan is fourth with 13.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. She is sixth in the Big 12 in rebounding.
The Cyclones are shooting 50 percent from the field as a team and 44 percent from 3-point range.
Last season, Iowa State finished 27-6 with a 13-3 Big 12 Conference record to tie for first in league standings. Iowa State traveled to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen Midwest Region before getting knocked out of postseason play in a 66-65 heartbreaker to Penn State. The Cyclones return three starters and seven letterwinners to this season's squad. Head Coach Bill Fennelly is in his sixth year at Iowa State.
Series Shorts
Missouri leads the MU-ISU series 40-13. The Tigers and the Cyclones began their rivalry in 1977 as members of the Big Eight Conference. Missouri dominated the series winning the first 29 games before giving up a 79-58 loss to the Cyclones in Ames in 1991. Over the last five seasons, Iowa State has been the dominant team taking nine of the last 12 meetings, including its 68-67 victory this season. The Tigers are 18-3 against the Cyclones in the Hearnes Center.
Last Time Against Iowa State
Missouri continues to prove that it is a force to be reckoned with in the Big 12 Conference. Although No. 7 Iowa State slipped past the Tigers 68-67, Missouri played a solid game against one of the nation's best.
"Our team is growing every game," MU head coach Cindy Stein said. "The poise we demonstrated and our ability to come back proves we can play with anyone in the country because of our effort. I think we are one of the finest teams in the conference."
The Tigers started the game with four points by senior Marlena Williams and kept the score within six points the entire half. With 6:16 left to go in the period, freshman Terianne Wolford and senior Amanda Lassiter drained 3-pointers to tie the score 28-28. MU continued to battle the Cyclones to end the half with a 38-38 dead lock.
Missouri throttled the basket with 40 attempts in the first. Perseverance and offensive rebounds proved to be the key to the Tigers game. Missouri pulled down 10 offensive boards in the first period and came up with six steals to curb the Cyclones. Both Lassiter and Williams reached double digits, scoring 16 and 12 points, respectively.
The battle continued in the second half. Mizzou kept pounding the basket with attempts and putting pressure on the Cyclone offense. MU took a 3-point lead in the game with 11:46, but was unable to hold on. ISU brought the score back its way on a jumper by center Angie Welle and went on a 12-point rally. The Tigers were unwilling to bow down however, as senior Tracy Franklin and junior Natalie Bright re-sparked MU's efforts with another pair of back-to-back 3s with 3:35 to go. Missouri continued the drive taking Iowa State to a two-point game. A defensive rebound by freshman Evan Unrau allowed Bright to score another 3-pointer to make bring the score within one with 00:41 left on the clock. The ball went back for two points for ISU. With just seconds to go, the Tigers attempted a missed 3-pointer, giving Unrau an offensive rebound and 2-point bucket to end the game 68-67.
Missouri shot shot 75 from the field and 25 came from 3-point range. MU only shot 37 percent in the game, but also kept Iowa State to its lowest field goal percentage of the season with 41. The Cyclones, who lead the Big 12 with a .444 3-point field goal percentage, shot just 28.6 percent from the 3-point arc. Iowa State has been averaging a +25-point scoring margin over its opponents in Hilton Coliseum, the one-point win over the Tigers is the closest game it has encountered at home this season.
All three of Missouri's seniors recorded double figures. Lassiter led the team with 21 points, Williams, who fouled out with seven minutes remaining, scored 12 points and Franklin came out of her four-game slump to post 11 points for the Tigers. Bright came off the bench to boost the Tigers with eight points and Unrau helped shooting 3-for-4 from the field to score six.
Missouri Defeats Nebraska
Missouri is 13-5 with a 4-3 Big 12 Conference record after defeating the Nebraska Cornhuskers 65-58. The win is Missouri's second over Nebraska since 1991 and the first victory in the Bob Devaney Center since 1990 when the Tigers defeated the Huskers 64-60. Nebraska still leads the series however, 30-20.
Much of the first period was a neck-and-neck battle. Senior Amanda Lassiter started the game with a block and a jumper on their way to scoring 20 points in the half. The Tigers and Huskers kept pace with a 2-point game for the majority of the period, until Missouri rallied for a six-point run with six minutes to go. MU kept the momentum to leave the half with a 40-27 lead. The competition was extremely heated resulting in 24 fouls, including three technical fouls in the first 20 minutes.
The Tigers struggled at the beginning of the second half allowing the Huskers to post nine points, while only scoring two. Missouri played solid defense in the game rebuilding a solid lead that it would not relinquish. The foul trouble continued in the second period, with two Nebraska players fouling out. Jointly, the teams committed 23 personal fouls.
Lassiter led the Tigers with 27 points, nine rebounds and six blocks. The Tigers knocked down 12 blocks overall to set a Missouri single-game record. Lassiter also advances as the fifth-leading shot blocker in school history with 120 career blocks. She is the only Tiger in the Top 10 who has set her career mark in under four years.
